Folks, remember what happened to music in 2005? Remember when we sat around where the next shift in music would occur? The Strokes, White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs hurricane woke up the listeners to remind us that creativity was alive, and the industry didnt drown us yet. Somewhere around 2005 we heard an explosion of perfectly recorded tunes from the small but maturing ‘indie-rock’ community. What were previously niche sounds and genres, began to perfect their impact on the public. The Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, and in the rap community, the Stones Throw releases, along with Pharoe Monch, and others, proved that the splash that occured a few years earlier could happen again.
I want to think 2009 is becoming one of those years. Consider the new music that has been released recently.
Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavillion
Kanye Wests 808 & Heartbreaks
HEALTH’s Got Color
Radiohead’s In Rainbows
MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular
And lastly, Jay-Z’s new release, Blueprint 3

Nothing is missing from this record, Douglas Wolk. This album is amazing, especially considering the current trends.
“Well, here’s the deal. We can’t actually praise an album like this with the current trends. People would think we’re too erratic. Let’s give it a 6.8 (definitely not anything in the 7’s – good god!). Now write a review that justifies that!”

In the case of Okay, the pseudonym for one-man band Marty Anderson, once you’ve learned he suffers from a strain of Crohn’s disease and is more or less house- and IV-bound, the urge arises to hear his twin debuts, Low Road and High Road, as expressions of his medical condition, perhaps even as meditations on encroaching mortality.

The latest record “New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)” from Erykah Badu sent chills down my spine this weekend. Walking around Greenpoint Saturday night, I had the chance to listen to the entire album. This sweet, lonesome woman needs to keep doing what she’s doing. Track 2 and 4 (“The Healer” and “My People”) both sweat of the late J-Dilla’s groove, and the third in the middle, “Me” is just the right mix of Roy Hargrove and bar grooves.

“Scientists, come out with your scales up!/ Get baptized in this ocean … Hip Hip is bigger than religion, Hip Hop is bigger than money, Hip Hop is bigger than the government/ This one is for Dilla – hip hop!”

Well, as is the regular jam around this joint, Pitchfork has once again introduced to another artist that previously made little noise on our radar. To those about to dance, I introduce to you Hercules and Love Affair.

It’s only fitting that I post this while I’m in DC visiting my sisters and their children. One of my favorite groups has released a new album. Medeski, Martin and Wood have usually relied on darker, more cynical themes for their avant-garde jazz recordings (see: “End Of The World Party (Just In Case)”), but this album turns that frown upside down.
“Let’s Go Everywhere” is a children’s album.

From Moto Boy’s Myspace
“Vamped up in high heels and makeup, with a nasty black metalguitar and a stunning high-pitched and baryton-deep voice he´s spectacular in his very own way, combining many beautiful things into one”

thanks fellas for giving me the honor.

Make more music kids… make more love. This New Zealand outfit is something pop and something colorful. More worldly than out-of-this-world, however, but not less beautiful. Through one of our publishers, I was introduced to The Ruby Suns.
Enjoy.
